Living and learning on Vassar’s campus
Set on Vassar’s historic residential campus, summer life unfolds through shared spaces, quiet beauty, and a close-knit community. Between classes, students gather in common spaces, wander tree-lined paths, and find their place within a campus that feels both intimate and supportive. It’s in these in-between moments—shared meals, late conversations, quiet afternoons—that campus life takes shape.
Our Campus
There’s a particular feeling to life on Vassar’s campus—one that comes from living among historic buildings, lively residential quads, and a landscape shaped for learning and community. Over time, the campus becomes familiar in quiet ways: a favorite path, a common room, a place to meet with friends. For many, it’s this sense of place that stays with you, and makes you feel like you were part of something special.
Residential Life (Where You'll Live)
You’ll stay in Vassar residence halls—real college housing with comfortable rooms, shared common spaces, and quick access to classrooms, dining, and campus greens.
Floors are supervised by residential staff and program leaders who create a safe, welcoming environment and help you settle in. Hall activities and evening gatherings make it easy to meet people, build community, and get a first taste of college life—independent but also supportive and social.
Campus Exploration & Daily Life
Your days on campus balance structured academic work with time to move, explore, and unplug. Outside of class, students gather with friends on the Quad, walk or run the trails around Sunset Lake and the Vassar Preserve, spend time outdoors, grab a latte at Crafted Kup, or sample Swedish candies at Fika Hygge on Raymond Avenue.
Students can also wander through the Loeb to see what’s on display, attend Powerhouse Theater performances, or simply spend time together around campus. Evenings feature a mix of organized and informal activities—movie nights, games on the lawn, group challenges, guided conversations, and low-key socials—designed to help students connect, engage, and discover new interests.
Leadership & Co-Curriculars
Outside the classroom and labs, co-curricular programming offers additional ways to grow, connect, and unwind. Through team-building activities, guest speakers, peer-led workshops, and guided reflection, students engage in experiences designed to broaden perspective, build confidence, and strengthen leadership skills.
Living and learning on an active college campus also means developing the habits and self-awareness that support long-term success. Campus deans and program directors lead open sessions on topics such as navigating roommate dynamics, managing academic expectations, building community and belonging, and approaching the college search—how to understand different institutional cultures, reflect on personal fit, and define what success in college can mean over time.
Students should expect an immersive experience that reflects the pace, independence, and shared responsibility of college life—one that encourages exploration, initiative, and genuine engagement, with time to enjoy campus life both inside and outside the classroom.
Meals & Dining
Everyone eats at Gordon Commons, Vassar’s bright, spacious, all-you-care-to-eat dining hall. Meals are included, and the options are genuinely good—fresh, made-from-scratch dishes, student-favorite made-to-order stations, grill and comfort classics, global features, and a rotating selection that keeps things interesting, as well as options to accommodate a range of dietary needs. There’s also a steady supply of baked treats from the campus bakery and Vassar student-approved coffee—strong enough to make a philosophy major have second thoughts!
Student Services & Support
Student well-being is central to the Vassar Pre-College Summer Program experience. To support students outside the classroom, Vassar has partnered with EngageU by NSLC, a student support and operations team affiliated with the National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC), to provide residential life staffing, co-curricular programming, and day-to-day student support.
Residential & Team Advisors
EngageU by NSLC’s Residential Advisors (RAs) live in the residence halls with students, offering guidance, supervision, and a welcoming presence throughout the program. Team Advisors oversee residential communities, coordinate programming, conduct regular check-ins, and serve as key points of contact for students and families. Together, they help create a residential environment that balances independence with structure—supportive, social, and age-appropriate.
Health, Safety & Logistics
A registered nurse is on staff to support student health needs, and program staff are available around the clock to respond to concerns. The program also provides assistance with airport transportation at designated arrival and departure times, helping students transition smoothly to and from campus.
Independence Within a Structured Community
While students enjoy meaningful independence—moving between classes, meals, and activities on a real college campus—the program follows clear schedules, expectations, and nightly check-ins to ensure safety, accountability, and well-being.
Academic Leadership & Program Oversight
All academic elements of the program—including curriculum design, course content, and instructor selection—are developed and overseen by Vassar faculty and program directors. The residential and co-curricular experience is designed to complement that academic work, helping students build confidence, community, and the habits that support long-term college success.
Campus Safety & Student Support
Vassar provides a strong safety and support infrastructure designed to help students feel secure while enjoying a vibrant, independent campus experience.
24/7 Campus Safety: Trained Campus Safety officers are on duty around the clock, with regular patrols across campus and a staffed Campus Response Center available at all times.
Emergency Communication: The college uses campus-wide alert systems (text, phone, and email) to share timely information during emergencies.
Residence Hall Security: Residence halls use controlled access systems, and staff are available to support students living on campus.
Outdoor & Campus Spaces: Vassar’s grounds—including areas like the Vassar Preserve—are widely used and generally safe during open hours, with standard expectations around awareness, shared use, and respect for posted guidelines.
